NOW PLAYING

"Even the Rain" (NR). Thematically heavy Spanish-language film in which a director (Gael Garcia Bernal) and his crew go to Bolivia in order to make a period film about the Spanish conquest of the New World. Grade: C+ Charles Theatre

"Human Resources Manager" (NR). Israeli film about a bureaucrat in Jerusalem who accompanies the body of a deceased employee for burial in an unnamed Eastern European country. Some of the symbolic and quasi-surreal touches are underscored too often, but the movie's humanitarian message registers. Grade: B- Charles Theatre

"Insidious" (PG-13). Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson come to the realization that they're raising their young family in a haunted house. Grade: C+ Towson Commons 8

"Of Gods and Men" (PG-13). Based on a true story, this spiritually moving drama concerns French monks living in a monastery in Algeria in the 1990s. When Muslim terrorists invade this mountainous region, the Roman Catholic monks must decide whether to stay or leave. Grade: A- Charles Theatre

"Prom" (PG). If you're a teen girl anxious about the prom, this gentle comedy is for you. Grade: B- Towson Commons 8

"Rio" (G). Smugglers chase two tropical birds (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway) through the Brazilian rain forest and carnival-festooned streets of Rio in this animated 3-D comedy. The chases and colorful musical production numbers are likely to amuse the kids. Grade: B Towson Commons

"Scream 4" (R). Director Wes Craven works again with Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell in a slasher movie that constantly acknowledges its own status as a slasher movie. It merits a yawn, not a scream. Grade: C Towson Commons 8

"Thor" (PG-13). When the heaven-dwelling Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finds himself exiled to earth, he contends with both government agents and outer space monsters. He also falls in love with a research scientist (Natalie Portman). It's a big and busy movie whose Norse trappings can't quite disguise the familiarity of its superhero storytelling. Grade: B Towson Commons 8, Rotunda Cinemas

"Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family" (PG-13). Sprawling comic melodrama in which Tyler Perry, who controls every aspect of the Madea franchise, bounces between pretty funny and really lame scenes. Grade: C Towson Commons 8, Rotunda Cinemas

"Winter in Wartime" (R). Dutch drama about a Nazi-occupied small town in which the mayor's teen son embarks on his own underground resistance activities. There are too many thematically convenient plot twists to make this melodrama as convincing as it should be, but technically it's a very well-made film. Grade: B Charles Theatre

"Water for Elephants" (PG-13). Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz and an endearing elephant named Rosie star in a circus melodrama whose dramatic force is muted by production design that makes Depression-era America look too beautiful to be depressing. The movie holds your attention, but is less than compelling. Grade: B- Towson Commons 8, Rotunda Cinemas
