The first black head football coach at a Baltimore County public high school was honored Sept. 12 when his name was attached to the Parkville High School field where he made his mark.

The name Yates Field, in honor of  Joseph Yates, who coached football and track at the school from the late 1960s through the early 1980s, was made official in a ceremony, about a half hour before the school’s first home football game.

Yates died about 10 years ago, but his wife, Edmonia Yates, a former principal of Forest Park High School, a former deputy superintendent for Baltimore City Public Schools and a former adjunct professor at Morgan State University, attended the ceremony and football game.
