United Cerebral Palsy of Central Maryland, a nonprofit organization serving children and adults with cerebral palsy and other disabilities, announced it recently received three grants totaling $159,000.

The Marion I. & Henry J. Knott Foundation awarded $75,000 to fund the salary of an occupational therapist for one year at the newly expanded Delrey School, formerly on Delrey Avenue, in Catonsville, and now on Commerce Drive, in Lansdowne.

The therapist is assigned to develop the school's sensory integration program, which treats students with processing disorders that prevent the brain from correctly perceiving sensory input, such as touch and spatial positioning.

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation awarded $50,000 through the Maryland Small Grant Program for staff training for three occupational therapists at the Delrey School as well as continuing education classes for physical and speech therapists.

This money will also fund nutrition classes for direct care staff, who support individuals with eating and swallowing disorders plus supervisory training for the agency's middle management staff.

The William J. and Dorothy K. O'Neill Foundation approved $34,000 for hardware to implement a database application to allow rapid communication between staff members and provide information on individuals served, resulting in improved quality of care in UCP's 46 residential group homes and five day centers throughout the state.
